Hypixel is one of the most famous servers available on Minecraft, with loads of mini-games and features and usually several thousands players on there at any one time. But can you use a VPN to access Hypixel? If so, what VPNs are recommended to use?
As a general rule, some VPNs can work sometimes to access Hypixel, but others can also not work and lead to IP bans. If you do need to use a VPN, it’s recommended to choose reputable provider and select an IP location close to your usual login location for best results.
It is possible for many Hypixel users to get away with using a VPN, but not guaranteed, and in general, it’s better to leave your VPN turned off when using Hypixel, unless there’s a really pressing and specific reason you have to use it (like being on some kind of public Wi-Fi)
If you do decide you need to use a VPN, you need to be smart and selective about which VPN you use, and which server location you select, to give it the best chance of working. You also need to be prepared to risk temporarily losing access to your account if Hypixel do detect that a VPN is used, or aren’t sure whether it’s you accessing your account from a new IP location that a VPN will give you.
Let’s look at the whole issue of using VPNs with Hypixel in more detail, along with some good free and Premium VPN options you can try.
Do VPNs Work With Hypixel?
Virtual Private Networks or VPNs are clever pieces of software that route internet traffic through secure, encrypted tunnels and also change the IP address and location of the user to mask their actual location. This is both their strength and their weakness when using them to access accounts like Hypixel.
I’ve checked around extensively on this, and unfortunately accounts do vary quite a lot on the effectiveness of using VPNs to access Hypixel. I can’t give a one-size-fits-all answer, as experiences differ on using VPNs:
Some users can access Hypixel without any problems using a VPN, whilst others do find their account blocked.
It varies greatly and there is no set answer as to whether you can use a VPN to access the platform. Some users manage to login fine with no problems on a VPN connection; others immediately find their account banned and have to go through an annoying appeal process to regain access.
However, here are some best practices to bear in mind if you do want to try using Hypixel with a VPN:
- If you really don’t need a VPN to use Hypixel, it’s best not to use one and just stick to using a normal non-VPN connection. This makes logins easier with less chance of IP bans.
- If you do use one, be sure to pick a good, reputable, quality VPN provider that uses a legit, separately loading software and a decent server selection (we have some good options in the sections below).
- AVOID using free VPN/proxy hybrids, especially those built into browsers, that often use shared IP addresses also used by lots of other people. These are very VERY likely to be banned right away. You might be able to use a reputable free VPN if they’ve got servers close to your usual login location (again, we have some options further below).
- If possible, try to pick a VPN that has servers in, or at least close to, your current usual login location/city, assuming you tend to login from roughly the same location normally. If you usually use Hypixel from a certain city, and you suddenly log in from a different location hundreds or thousands of miles away using a VPN server, it’s more likely to trigger an IP ban, as Hypixel might (rightly) wonder why your login location has suddenly changed so drastically from what it normally is. Be smart with how you use VPN server locations to access Hypixel.
- If one VPN server doesn’t work in accessing Hypixel, it’s probably best NOT to immediately try another server in a totally different location, since this may flag up even more on Hypixel’s security system as the same account keeps being accessed from all these different locations.
USA users are in luck here, since servers are often offered in major cities (Los Angeles, New York, Chicago etc) even on some free VPNs. We’ll also cover some other common locations offered in different countries further below.
What To Do If You Get Banned Using a VPN With Hypixel
It’s unfortunately not uncommon for users to get their accounts banned if you try using a VPN with Hypixel. The risk of this is increased if you select a VPN server location a long way away from where you usually access the game (IP addresses always reveal the approximate location of the user).
If your account does get an IP ban, a message like this usually pops up:
If this happens, go to https://www.hypixel.net/appeal to appeal the ban. It may take several days to get access to your account back.
Here are the general steps:
- Link your Minecraft account to Hypixel if you haven’t already. See here for how to do this.
- Access the Ban Appeal page using the link above.
- Enter your username, UUID, and Ban ID
- Explain why you think your ban should be overturned. If you were banned when you logged in from a new location using a VPN, it’s probably best to be honest and tell them the VPN server location you used, plus the time you logged in, so they know it was you was accessing the account. As far as I know, VPNs are technically allowed on Hypixel, but they can trigger bans because your login location and IP can keep changing if you use them. Be concise and clear as you only get one appeal.
- Wait a few days to hear back from the appeal team. Depending on your explanation, sometimes they’re accepted, but sometimes they’re not, so be thorough but concise and give them as much evidence as possible that it was definitely you (the account holder) logging in and not someone else.
- If your appeal is not accepted, you’ll have to create a new account and start over to regain access. See the section further below where we cover this.
Therefore this is some risk to using a VPN to access Hypixel, since you might lose access to you account for a while if their algo either detects a VPN or doesn’t like the new login location you appear to be using. You can usually get it back by following the link above, but you’ll lose access for a few days. Also be aware that IP bans are logged and stored under your account, so there will be a record of it. Too many of them and you might get irreversibly banned.
Indeed these login alerts and IP bans can happen even if you’re NOT using a VPN, but just by logging in from a new location that’s a long way from where you normally log in. Most platforms now keep a close eye on login locations and times for account holders to make sure accounts aren’t hacked.
If an account is suddenly accessed from a totally new IP address and location than what’s normally used (if they keep a track of logins), then they have no idea whether it’s the account holder logging in, or whether it’s an unauthorized user. Therefore these security measures are understandable and must be borne in mind when using software such as VPN which changes your IP location.
Best Free VPNs To Use With Hypixel
Your best starting point when trying to get Hypixel to work through a VPN is to try a good free one – the good news is there’s some really good, legitimate, and sometimes even unlimited free VPN options with servers in major countries.
Here’s a full table of these and some other good free VPN options, so you can pick and test one that’s got servers where you want them.
Provider | Free Server Locations | Data Limit | More Info |
---|---|---|---|
ProtonVPN | 3 (USA, Amsterdam, Japan) | Unlimited | See here |
AtlasVPN | 3 (USA East, USA West, Amsterdam) | 5 GB/month | See here |
TurboVPN | 4 (USA, Germany, Singapore, India). | Unlimited | See here |
ZoogVPN | 5 (USA, UK, Netherlands) | 10 GB/month | See here |
Hide.me | 5 (Netherlands, USA, Germany, UK, Canada) | 10 GB/month (random server selection) | See here |
PrivadoVPN | 10 (USA, UK, Canada, Germany, France, Netherlands, Switzerland, Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, New Zealand) | 10 GB/month | See here |
Windscribe | 10 (USA, UK, Canada, Hong Kong, France, Germany, Netherlands, Switzerland, Romania, Denmark). | 10 GB/month | Visit site |
Tunnelbear | 49 | 500 MB/month | Visit site |
Here’s a bit more of a breakdown for major countries:
- USA Users – AtlasVPN (New York, LA), ProtonVPN (Las Vegas, Houston, Chicago, New York, Atlanta) TurboVPN all have unlimited free VPNs with American servers, so try these first. PrivadoVPN (New York, Washington DC, Chicago, Miami, Los Angeles) also has a good free USA server choice, but a 10 GB/month data cap.
- Canada Users – Hide.me, PrivadoVPN (Montreal) and Windscribe all have free VPN servers in Canada with 10 GB/month allowances you can try out with Hypixel.
- UK Users – PrivadoVPN and Windscribe have free UK servers (London) to try out with 10 GB/month data.
With free VPNs, the good news is that it’s risk free to try them out with Hypixel – even if it doesn’t work, you don’t lose anything, other than perhaps access to your account for a few days if it’s blocked. As we suggested earlier, try to pick on that’s got server locations near to where you normally log in without a VPN, if possible.
And if you get one to work using a limited free version, they all have good paid plans you can upgrade to with unlimited use, so a free version is a good way to test out whether Hypixel works.
Best Premium VPNs To Use With Hypixel
If you’re finding good success using Hypixel with a free VPN, then you can just upgrade to that provider’s paid plan. But there are also some more Premium VPN option with unlimited use and more server choice, then some good options are:
- Private Internet Access (PIA) – Super cheap price of $3.33/month, servers in 80 countries (including LOADS of USA server locations plus multiple Canada/UK/Australia locations). Shadowsocks protocol available to obfuscate the VPN connection. PIA has the best selection of USA server locations of any VPN I can find on the market.
- NordVPN – Excellent reputation for unblocking streaming services, servers in 60 countries, double encryption, but a bit more pricey at $5/month
- ExpressVPN – Most expensive VPN at around $8/month, but best reputation for getting around IP blocks.
- VyprVPN – Mid priced VPN but one of the best for circumventing attempts to block VPN use with their proprietary Chameleon Protocol.
- Editor’s pick – PIA has the best of everything plus low price, so I’d try this one first with Hypixel, then VyprVPN with their Chameleon protocol.
All of these VPNs have 30 day money back guarantees, so if you find it doesn’t work with Hypixel, or you’re not satisfied with it for any other reason, you can get a no-questions-asked refund within the first month, so they’re effectively risk free to try as long as you can make an upfront payment (you can even try a 1 month subscription if you like – usually for around $7-10).
Can VPNs Be Used To Get Around Hypixel IP Bans?
So far we’ve covered whether you can use VPNs to access Hypixel without being banned. But it’s interesting to flip this the other way and ask whether you can actually use a VPN to circumvent or get around an IP ban issued by Hypixel.
The roundabout answer to this question is yes, but you’ll have to set up a new account to do so, since these bans are typical done at the account level as well as the IP level. So you’ll have to start all over again with a new Minecraft account/username, plus a new IP address, which a VPN can provide you.
Here are the general steps to do this:
- Purchase and install a reputable VPN service from a provider. PIA, NordVPN or VyprVPN are good options for accessing Hypixel (all have money back guarantees as well if there’s any issue). Or try a free one if they’ve got a server location you like plus unlimited data.
- Completely uninstall Minecraft, including all related files. Remove it totally from your PC/Mac, so there’s nothing associated with your old account.
- Open your VPN app and connect to a new server. Be sure to pick a location you can keep using over and over again, without needing to change it and trigger these IP verifications/blocks.
- Do a completely fresh installation of Minecraft on your computer. Create a totally new Minecraft account with a new email and username.
- You should now be able to access Hypixel through Minecraft with this newly created account and IP address/location. Try to keep using the same VPN server location whenever you log in though to prevent further bans.
How Much Data Does Hypixel Use?
If you are using Hypixel on a free VPN with a data cap, it’s useful to know how much data the game is using. 10 GB is a common allowance for free VPNs, so here are some usage stats to bear in mind.
Checking the forums on this, the answers varied widely as to how much data Hypixel actually uses, and it also depends greatly on what exactly you’re doing (which sub-game) as to how much data you use. Skyblock for example uses quite a lot.
But here’s some different estimates on data use depending on activity:
- Low end – 80 MB an hour
- Mid-range – 200 MB an hour (most commonly cited, especially when using Skyblock)
- Higher end – 300 MB/hour.
If you manage to get an unlimited free/Premium VPN working with Hypixel, then it’s not an issue, but assuming a data cap of 10 GB (PrivadoVPN, Windscribe, Hide.me free versions), here’s how much play you can squeeze out of your allowance at each use level:
- Low use (80MB/hour)– Can get around 120 hours play time with a 10 GB data cap.
- Medium use (200 MB/hour) – Can get about 50 hours play time with a 10 GB cap
- High use (300 MB/hour) – Can get around 30 hours play time with a 10 GB cap.
Be aware that data use over a VPN is slightly higher than over an unprotected connection, but not usually by much.
